  • A Syrian Limestone Funerary Relief of a Man, Palmyra

  • 21 1/4 by 16 1/2 in. 54 by 42 cm.
carved in high relief with the bust of a man holding a scroll and clad in a chiton and himation, his face with finely outlined lips, large prominent eyes with incised irises and pupils, and grooved eyebrows, his hair falling in short crescentic locks over the forehead, three lines of Palmyrene inscription carved on the slab to his left: "Alas! Makkai son of Harshu."

Condition

Both hands with adjoining areas of drapery over breast broken off and repaired, large chip on drapery over proper right wrist , hairline crack running all around face appear to be a flaw in stone, face seems to have been somewhat cleaned and slightly repolished, especially chin and nose surfaces.
