Description

  • A Gnathia-ware Oinochoe, attributed to the Volcani Painter
  • Terracotta
  • Height 13 in. 33 cm.
with foot in two degrees, ribbed body, overhanging rim, and ribbed handle with each attachment plate molded in the form of a maenad head with long flowing hair, the shoulder decorated with two erotes attending a cock-fight, a wreath of ivy around the neck, the details in added yellow and white.

Condition

Mended from several fragments with in-painting and minor areas of restoration along breaklines, a small area painted black on shoulder in handle zone as well as black paint all around around mask at base of handle suggest some restoration, minor flaking to black glaze on handle as expected, some areas of added white decoration have faded and flaked off in areas, three small chips along lower edge of rim.
