Condition

Overall in very good condition. Though the original intent of this work is not known, it was likely executed as an architectural element, screen or sculpture. The frame is likely later, but is well suited and fitted to the work. The frame is constructed in a manner in which it can be easily removed if desired from the sculpture. The patinated bronze surfaces display an exceptionally deep and rich dark brown patination, heightened with a gilt patination in the stylized foliate decoration and the hair of the Diane figure. The gilt patination with some gentle rubbing and minor losses consistent with age. With a slightly green hue to the patination on the recessed area between the legs of the Diane figure. The frame with some surface scratches, minor surface discoloration and some surface residue. The top surfaces of the feet on the frame are currently lacking patination and the natural metal is exposed. This work has a strong sculptural presence, and is incredibly impactful and dramatic when viewed in person. All of the figures and decorative elements are rendered in dramatic high relief. The stylized composition has great movement, and epitomizes the Art Deco aesthetic. A stunning and rare work by this artist to appear at auction.

Catalogue Note

The present lot is a rare large scale masterwork by Celine Lepage to appear at auction.  Characteristic of her work, which often incorporates evocative stylized figures within architectural contexts, the present example projects a powerful presence.  Lepage explored classical themes and further expanded on the subjects by executing them in various mediums including wood, bronze and ceramic.  Period documentation  shows that the artist also executed  the "Diane aux Fougères" in ceramic.
