Condition

Overall in very good original condition. As seen in the catalogue illustration, the sculpture has been exposed to the elements, and likely was displayed outside for a period of time. The patination color, shown accurately in the catalogue illustration, was no doubt affected by the exposure to the elements. With some rubbing, losses to patination, discolorations and presents with streaks to the coloration and surface dirt. The patination at present is quite stunning in person, with light variation in color at the height points of the sculpture. The sculpture was produced with intentional rough edges, exposed seams, uneven edges, and intentional fissures and openwork, which are all part of the design and not an issue of condition. The surface of the Centaur is executed with raised and incised decoration throughout, adding detail and depth to the figure. The body of the sculpture, rendered with slight similarity to body armor and life casts, reference other works by Claude Lalanne. An elegant harmony of the anthromorphic elements and the surrealist details. The compass divider element in the sculpture’s proper left hand is a separate element, affixed to the sculpture with a bolt. The hole seen in the catalogue illustration along the compass is for fastening the bolt. At present the compass fits under the figure’s arm with ease, but does not affix the length of the bolt. This is minor and likely due to the minor changes in the metal framework with age. The compass affixes safely and is stable once placed. The other decorative element in the figure’s proper right hand with a possible break to the chain, as seen in the catalogue illustration. This element can be removed from the sculpture’s hand and the current bends to the wire likely original. The result is an immensely dramatic piece in person, with detailed sculptural elements. The piece has acquired a beautiful patina with age and exposure to the outdoor elements. This collaborative sculpture presents with distinct elements of both Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne individual aesthetic. A superb monumental work, which is the only example of the model in this size to appear at auction. Due to the size and weight of this sculpture, special handling and/or packing may be required during the shipping process.
