Catalogue Note

Carpeaux's Ugolino was made for his fourth-year student project whilst a pensionnaire at the French Academy in Rome. The extraordinary monumental bronze cast is in the Musée d'Orsay and the equally impressive marble is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. From 1914 the Susse foundry had the rights to edit the group. Poletti and Richarme's catalogue raisonné mentions another version, numbered 2/10 and cast in 1928. The authors record that this rare silvered edition was finished in 1945.
