each mirror surmounted by the Macclesfield crest flanked by pierced foliate scroll carving, the triple panelled bevelled plates within panelled and bevelled mirrored margins, the elongated shaped rectangular frames with paterae-filled strapwork borders and printed paper margin plate dividers

Provenance

Commissioned by Thomas Parker, Baron Macclesfield before his elevation to 1st Earl of Macclesfield in 1721, (see fig.1);
Thence by descent

Condition

The three central plates to one mirror replaced, possibly later during the 18th century or early 19th century with un-bevelled glass. Some of the original gilded surface is visible particularly on the crests. The frames retain the original worn gilding beneath some later over-gilding. One cresting missing part of the foliate carving to one side. The other cresting with old breaks. The paterae-decorated, moulded frames outlining the border glasses are gilded on to a grey-coloured metal (possibly lead). One mirror has had its sides slightly planed, presumably so that it could be accomodated within dimensions of a specific pier. As a consequence the `lost' gilding has exposed the timber beneath. Minor characteristic shrinkage to frames along the lines of construction. The decorated paper strips concealing the joines to the border glasses have characteristic wear, losses and restoration. Typical degrading to the silvering of the mirror plates, mainly to the border glasses. General minor typical wear and losses to the gilding. The mirror with the original central bevelled plates with a crack to the bottom right border glass. Both mirrors with minor restored chips to the border glasses.
