Condition

Colours: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate although the overall tonality is brighter and more vibrant in the original where the whites tend more to cream hues and the reds are stronger. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There is slight canvas draw in the corners of the composition and in places at the turnover edges. There are networks of stable hairline drying cracks scattered throughout, inherent to the artist’s impasto technique. Some isolated areas of paint lifting and tiny paint losses are apparent in the thin black impasto areas, most notably to the figure’s left eye and left hand. Upon close inspection there are stable craquelures to the white painted left flank of the composition, and a circular pattern of impact cracks towards the upper left corner. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals no retouches or any restorations.
