Description

- CHICAGO (POLITICAL RALLY)
- Gelatin silver
signed, titled, and dated (twice) in ink in the margin, 1956, printed no later than 1973 (The Americans, p. 125; Looking In, pp. 281 and 476, Contact #58)
Provenance
Sotheby's New York, 18 April 1997, Sale 6973, Lot 380
Acquired from the above by Carole Thompson, as agent, for a private Illinois collection
Condition
Except for somewhat darkened margins and edges, this print is in generally excellent condition. The tip of the lower left margin corner has been folded under. Edge-darkening is also evident on the reverse of the print.
While the photographer has dated the print twice, '1955?' and '1973,' the exact printing date of this photograph is not evident. The fact that this print does not fluoresce under ultraviolet light suggests that this paper could have been made prior to circa 1960, when manufacturers began adding optical brighteners to photographic papers.
