Description

  • pendant cross
  • engraved and partially enamelled gold
inscribed along the body on the front: HONOOR and to the reverse: ET IOY (honour and joy)

Condition

The cross has been recently sympthathetically cleaned. There are some remnants of the enamelling. The four pins have lost their pearl or gem terminals. Otherwise the cross is in good and wearable condition.

Catalogue Note

The four small pins between the flared arms of this cross probably held precious stones or pearls. Interestingly, similar pins can also be found on the Winteringham Tau Cross in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 1990.283).
