Condition

The actual paintings are less red and less bright in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Both paintings are relined with stretcher marks slightly visible to the front. The paint layer is secure though quite abraded in the background. Subsequent retouchings can be made out with the naked eye in these areas. Both paint surfaces are under a slightly dirty varnish. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings in the background and reveals a few additional small scattered ones in the fruit still lifes. Offered in plain black wood frames with a faux tortoise shell fillet in good condition.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the R.K.D., The Hague, for endorsing the attribution to Gillemans the Younger on the basis of photographs and for suggesting that these two paintings are possibly cut from the same larger, original composition.
