Description

  • Théobald Michau
  • A river landscape with figures by a ferry, other figures seated on the banks of the river, with their cattle in the water
  • signed lower right: T. Michau.
  • oil on copper

Provenance

With Galerie Leegenhoek, Paris, 1989.

Condition

The actual painting is even deeper and stronger in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The copper plate is in good condition. No damages are apparent. The paint surface appears in good condition and is under a clear layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals a scattering of tiny retouchings, more frequent in the central area in the water and the boats, and in the darker passages, tiny scattered ones in the figures, and only a few in the sky. It is very nicely done, as the retouchings can not easily be made out with the naked eye. Offered in a plain wood frame with a strip of wood missing on the left hand side.

Catalogue Note

In his early years Théobald Michau was apprenticed to the landscape painter Lucas Achtschellinck (1626-1699) in Brussels. He was made Master of the Guild there in 1698 and was elected a member of the Guild of Antwerp in 1710. Although painted more than a century later, his works still show a conspicious debt to the designs of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) and Jan Breughel the Younger (1601-1678), whose river landscape compositions, evidently inspired the present work.
