Provenance

Comte A. de Romee de Vichenet, Belgium;
Comte Amede de Beauffort, Belgium;
Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 7 October 1990, lot 121.

Condition

The actual painting is lighter blue and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel is bevelled on all sides, and consists of three planks, joined horizontally, reinforced by battons to the reverse. The planks are slightly warped. One split of approx. 15 cm. can be seen between the middle and upper plank along the right edge. The paint surface seems to be a bit abraded in the sky, with the woodgrain showing through, and is under a somewhat clear and shiny varnish layer. The joins have been retouched, but no major damages are apparent. Inspection under Ultra Violet light reveals the retouched joins and additional small retouchings throughout, following the grain of the wood. Also some retouching can be seen in the red flag and sails to the left. Offered in a cabinet style, faux tortoise shell frame with gilt fillets, in good condition. (ML)

Catalogue Note

This painting is very close in style to the Battle of Texel, 1673, by Johannes Becx, sold London, Sotheby's, 29 May 2002, lot 1. In particular the 'Seven Provinces', the flagship of Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1606-1676), is similarly rendered in both compositions.
