With Galerie Schloss Ricklingen, Hannover, by 1976.

Condition

The catalogue illustrations are representative for the actual paintings. Both canvases are relined (glue). Both paint surfaces seem to be in very good condition, with especially the flowers nicely preserved. Tiny discoloured retouchings can be seen in the face of the figure with the dark hair. This is confirmed by inspection under Ultra Violet light, as well as tiny retouchings in the flowers of both works and some small strengthening in the faces and figures. UV light also reveals an unevenly cleaned varnish layer. The paint surfaces are under a fine craquelure pattern. Offered in carved and gilt wood frames, a few chips. (ML)

Catalogue Note

Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen trained in his father's studio and specialised in floral still life painting. At the age of thirteen, he was accepted as a Master of the Antwerp Guild and was elected Dean in 1691. Verbruggen spent most of his life in Antwerp, with the exception of a stay in The Hague from 1706 to 1723, where he met and worked together with Mattheus Terwesten. This pair is one of several collaborations between the two painters. Other paintings of the same subject can be found in the oeuvre of Verbruggen, amongst which a signed pair, similar in many aspects and also most probably painted in collaboration with Terwesten, was sold, Paris, Perrin-Royere-La Jeunesse-Vergez-Honta, 15 November 1998, lot 38.1

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the R.K.D., The Hague, for confirming the attribution to Terwesten for the figures on the basis of photographs.
