Description

  • An elegant company seated around a table playing cards
  • oil on panel

Condition

The catalogue illustration is fairly representative of the actual painting, which is a bit softer in tone. The panel is cradled, but seems to consist of 4 planks, joined horizontally. The panel is blackened to the reverse. Four splits seems to be apparent, running horizontally along the upper edge, in the centre and along the lower edge. They have been repaired and the discoloured retouchings are visible. Discoloured retouchings are also visible along the joints. The paint surface is somewhat abraded, showing the grain of the wood, but no further damages are apparent. Small discoloured retouchings can be seen throughout, especially in the background. Inspection under Ultra Violet light reveals an unevenly cleaned varnish layer, and shows the afore mentioned retouchings, as well as some additional in the face of the lady and chair. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame, in fair condition. (ML)
