Description
- Abraham Willaerts
- A coastal landscape with numerous figures on the shore, a Dutch fleet setting sail, and a rowing boat approaching the shore
- signed lower centre: AB(in ligature) Willarts.
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Noble collection, Turin;
With Galleria Caretto, Turin, by 1984.
Condition
The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas has a fairly recent stable relining. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. The paint surface has become a little flattened. The paint layer is secure, if quite thin in the sea, in the lower foreground and in some of the figures. There's a vertical retouched scratch running from the upper edge in the centre. Some small scattered retouchings are visible in the sky, and a few in the houses and the sea. Inspection under UV light reveals more extensive ones in the sky, s well as minor strengthenings in the ships and figures.
Offered in a plain wood frame with decorative gilt fillets in good condition.
