Description

  • Hieronymus Bosch
  • the temptation of saint anthony
  • Pen and grey-brown ink and wash, heightened with white, over some indications in red chalk, indented and blackened on the reverse for transfer

Condition

Though the drawing is no longer laid down, it appears that it previously was, and probably as a result of this the indentations are not visible throughout (they are most apparent in the gate in the background, and in the Saint's robes).

Catalogue Note

We are very grateful to Dr. Fritz Koreny for pointing out that this intriguing drawing seems to be loosely based on part of a painting by a follower of Bosch, now in Brussels.1  The technical evidence indicates that it was made, or used, for the preparation of a print.
