Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Hamish Dewar, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Structural Condition The artist's panel has been cradled and this would appear to have successfully ensured an even and secure support. The panel would appear to have originally had an arched top and there is also an addition along the lower horizontal edge which is approximately 2 cm in width. There are slight vertical cracks which are stable running from the upper and lower horizontal edges. Paint Surface The paint surface has a discoloured and uneven varnish layer which is confirmed by inspection under ultra-violet light. Cleaning should therefore result in a considerable colour change and far greater depth to the darker pigments. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows minimal retouchings, but there may be some retouchings beneath the discoloured varnish layers. The strip along the lower horizontal edge and the spandrels in the upper left and upper right have been added at a later date and there are some very small flecks of paint loss and minor abrasions in the lower right of the composition. Summary The painting therefore appears to be in good and stable condition and should respond well to cleaning and revarnishing.

Catalogue Note

Daniel Seghers was the originator of flower garlands and cartouches and such works make up the majority of the inventory of the two hundred and thirty nine paintings listed in his workshop at his death. Several of the flower garlands, cartouches and festoons are dated and on the basis of its distinct similarity to several of these it is possible to date the present work to the mid-1640s; see, for example, the 1643 dated garland in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden, the 1644 cartouche with a hyacinth in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, and another cartouche in the Staatliche Kunsthaus in Karlsruhe, also from 1644.

We are grateful to Drs. Fred G. Meijer of the R.K.D., The Hague, for endorsing the attribution to Seghers following first-hand inspection.
