Condition

Wax lined, some finely patterned craquelure; under UV: some spots of inpainting to figures at left, dots and dashes of inpainting to horse, particularly to his rear, spots of inpainting to structure in background and throughout landscape, areas of inpainting between and beside horse's front legs, dots and dashes to the sky, particularly around horse and figure at left.

Catalogue Note

In addition to his royal collection of Arabians, King Louis XIV (1638-1715) gave many of his imported horses as gifts.  As suggested by Wootton's inscription, the fortunate recipient of this fine animal may have been John, 5th Baron Petre or his brother Thomas (who was named the 6th Baron Petre in 1684).
