Catalogue Note

War between the empire and Turkey flared in 1663 when Turkey provoked by Austria's involvement in Hungary crossed the Danube.. The canister depicts the battle of I August 1664 when imperial forces prevented the Turks from successfully crossing the river Raab a tributary of the Danube in south eastern Austria. Had they won the battle the Turks would have had a clear route to Vienna and Graz. Europe was fascinated by this Turkish invasion, both terrified and admiring, a duality reflected in the tulip handle and ferocity of the battle.

In addition to the Augsburg hallmarks, the piece is also struck with St Petersburg control marks for 1786. The silversmith Samuel Hornung is recorded by Dr Scheffler to be the maker of a 1665-70 embossed buffet dish in the Hermitage museum, St Petersburg
