Condition

This work is in very good condition. Under UV there is a small touch up in the top left, and drips of varnish along the bottom fluoresce. There is circular craquellure in the lower left, likely from a light impact to the reverse.

Catalogue Note

Beginning in 1959, Coughtry created a series of paintings in which an evasive image of a figure appears, recedes, disappears and floats in an indeterminate space.

Gary Michael Dault comments:
...figures emerging separately or together from the welter of oil paint which defines them, and which coalesces around them, giving them substance and context.
