Catalogue Note

The monogram is reportedly that of John Henry Kirby (1860-1940), a major manufacturer of lumber in Texas and the Southern Untied States.  Kirby, who spent most of his life in Houston, founded the Kirby Lumber Company in 1900, and later the Kirby Petroleum Company.  He served two terms as president of the National Lumber Association and was the founder and president of the Southern Pine Association.  A life-long Democrat, Kirby served two terms in the Texas legislature.  He was convinced that Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal was a threat to the fabric of American Life, and thus founded the Southern Committee to Uphold the Constitution.  This desk set is thought to have been presented to Kirby by his board of directors.
