Condition

This exceptional work by René Lalique is in good overall condition. There are two or three enclosed tiny air bubbles and two or three minor scratches to panel. There is an area to the left of the panel, near the female figure's hip, where the panel doesn't describe a complete circle. Rubbing to patina of bronze base, and a couple of spots that have possibly been retouched underneath female figure's feet. The timepiece has a 8.5cm. diameter black dial with Roman numerals, the electric movement by Léon Hatot, no 53547. The enamel on the hands worn, as can be seen on the back cover. The nickel plated housing slighty worn and pitted, consistent with age. The movement is not tested or guaranteed. This rare piece is in its original condition and ready for display.

Catalogue Note

Le Jour et la Nuit is today celebrated as one of the finest of Lalique's creations. When released it was Lalique's most expensive timepiece at 3500 francs and was available in both grey and blue glass (Bayer, Waller, op. cit., p. 119). It is thought that less than thirty models are known to exist, the majority in grey glass. Models in blue glass are very rare.
