Un jour d'avril 1960, il n'y tint plus et se précipita chez moi pour me faire participer à l'éblouissement de sa découverte. L'art pour César est le langage de la fête : la métamorphose visuelle est un rite de la participation collective, un peu comme un banquet. Quand César découvre un aspect nouveau de sa réalité, il entend le donner à voir aux autres, leur faire partager son émotion, sa fascination. (...) j'ai admiré avec lui l'incroyable diversité des Compressions, le caractère presque magique de l'entier processus mécanique de leur élaboration.
