Condition

Good overall condition. Original canvas. Needs cleaning. Under a yellow varnish. Some small lacks and upheavals in the center of the architecture, in the sky and in the water (visible on the image).

Catalogue Note

Le Palais Montecuccoli se trouve au sud du Grand Canal de Venise. Egalement appelé Palazzo Contarini dal Zaffo, il a été construit au XVème siècle dans le style de Pietro Lombardo.
Au moment où Sickert a peint cette toile (entre 1901- 1904), le palais était la résidence de la Princesse de Polignac (née Singer, fille de Isaac Merritt Singer, fondateur de l'entreprise Singer de machines à coudre américaine) que l'artiste avait rencontrée à Dieppe.
Un dessin préparatoire pour notre tableau,au crayon et à l'encre rouge, est conservé à la Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester.
