Description

  • Fabric and giltwood
the cartouche shaped padded backs within moulded frames including scrolled and padded arm supports, scrolled aprons and leaf carved cabriole legs covered in blue and gold silk lampas, circa 1840, regilding and fabric distressed

Provenance

Possibly acquired by William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (1748-1811);
Certainly owned by William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1857) who had the chairs recovered circa 1840 as part of the decorative scheme of the new Ballroom at Devonshire House;

Condition

All of the chairs have substantial losses to the gilt gesso decoration, which also has much ingrained dirt, but the carving remains mainly intact. The frames are generally in solid condition and have impressive proportions. The upholstery is distressed with rips and worn areas.
