Catalogue Note

First edition, completely hand-colored, of this elaborate record of the entry of King William III of England into the Hague.

The entry (5 February 1691) gave rise to spectacular celebrations. Triumphal arches and pyramids were erected in the city, buildings were illuminated, and fireworks displayed. The plates illustrate these festivities, along with scenes from the King's life, including sea-battles, sieges, and treaties.

Most of the plates are colored in varied hues but some use a beautiful golden monochrome wash. Only one other colored copy has appeared at auction in the past 35 years (Gourary, Christie's NY, 12 June 2009, lot 69). "One of this prolific artist's best books" (Hofer 147 on the French edition of the next year).
