Catalogue Note

This volume is remarkable for the amount of supplementary material supplied in manuscript, all apparently in the same contemporary hand, both on the blank rectos or versos of the printed text and on the supplementary leaves bound in.  First published in 1581, Rumpolt's work is one of the best-known early German cookery books: it is the first work to contain a recipe for the celebrated Swiss potato dish "Rösti".  The woodcuts, which repeat those in the first edition, are by Jost Amman, Virgil Solis and Hans Weidlitz.
