  • A Portrait Snuff Box
  • the box 6 by 8 cm.; 2 1/4 by 3 1/8 in.; the miniature 3.5 by 2.8 cm.; 1 1/2 by 1 1/16 in.
rectangular, the gold-lined tortoiseshell box set with foliate chased mounts, the lid applied with an oval miniature of a gentleman within a split-pearl frame

Provenance

Beriah Botfield (1807-1863), Norton Hall, Daventry, Northamptonshire, by whom bequeathed to the Thynne family;
by descent until the sale of the Trustees of the Longleat Chattels Settlement, Christie's London, 13 June 2002, lot 467

Condition

The miniature is preserved in fine condition and the colours remain fresh. There is a minor scuff to the extreme edge of the miniature, centre left. The box condition is as seen. Catalogue Note

It is possible that the sitter could be Beriah Botfield (1807-1863) when a young man. The features are very similar to the portrait of Botfield painted by Thomas Phillips in 1828 (Longleat House, Wiltshire).
