Catalogue Note

W. Hicock Low was born in New York in 1853.  He trained with Carolus Duran at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1870's before returning to New York at the end of the decade where he joined the Society of American Artists and eventually the National Academy of Design.  The present work, dated 1876, was painted while Low was still in Paris, in the vicinity of the Loing River which was a favored subject of the French Impressionists.
