Catalogue Note
This work, which Burchfield painted during his self-described "golden year", 1917, depicts the artist's morther seated in her home in Salem, Massachusetts. It is preparatory to the gouache, Woman in a Doorway, in the The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.
