Provenance

Vincent van Gogh, Princenhage, near Breda (the uncle of the painter Vincent van Gogh. He was a partner at Goupil & Cie in The Hague and introduced his nephews Theo and Vincent to the art trade; his sale: Pulchri Studio, The Hague, 2 April 1889, lot 19)
Purchased at the above sale by the grandfather of the present owners

Condition

Original canvas. There are a few very minor pinhole-sized spots of retouching visible under ultraviolet light in the lower-right quarter. There is a 2cm tear in the sky and a small hole in the lower part of the extreme right edge, scattered fine craquelure, notably a crack in the centre at the lower edge with some spots of paint flaking, and drop marks along the lower edge. The varnish is dirty and yellowed, and the work would be transformed with a professional clean. Held in a decorative gold-painted wood and plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

From a vantage point in Beyoglu, Fabius Brest's view is to the south-west towards the Topkapi Palace, with the Bosphorus beyond. To the right lie the minarets of the Haghia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, while boats ply the calm waters of the Golden Horn in the foreground.
