Catalogue Note

Willem Koekkoek was the second son of Hermanus Koekkoek (1815-1882). Unlike his father, a famous marine painter, Willem specialised exclusively in Dutch town views.

The present lot is impressive by its size and its exceptional perspective, with figures in the foreground and a sunlit view of the lovely town of Naarden in the background. Being common practice in the nineteenth century, Willem Koekkoek felt free to adjust reality to fit his own vision. In this work he enhanced the picturesque quality of the setting by adding a castle, an element often used by artists working in the Romantic tradition.
