Condition

STRUCTURE This picture is relined and in good condition with strong colouring. The picture should benefit from a clean as it is covered by a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish which should be easy to remove by a professional restorer. There are no signs of craquelure and the paint surface appears stable throughout. There is a scratch to the paint surface in the top left corner. UNDER ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT There are no obvious retouchings but the dirty opaque varnish makes a conclusive assessment difficult. FRAME This picture is contained in a 'Rossetti-style' gilt frame (minor damages and rubbing to the gilding). For more information regarding this picture please contact the Victorian & Edwardian Pictures Department on +44 (0)207 293 5718.

Catalogue Note

It is said that the present picture originally depicted Salome carrying the head of John the Baptist, later repainted with a more palatable subject. It is an early work by Prinsep and demonstrates the artist's admiration of the paintings of his friend Rossetti. It may depict Rossetti's favourite model Fanny Cornforth who was painted by other artists within his circle at the time.
