Catalogue Note

Although Boris' parents, Ferdinand I (1861-1948) and Marie-Louise of Bourbon-Parma (1870-1899) were Roman Catholics, Boris, who would be ruling a traditionally Orthodox nation, was received into the Orthodox church on February 14, 1896 with Nicholas II as his godfather.  Several months after Nicholas' death in July 1918, Ferdinand I of Bulgaria abdicated and Boris ascended the throne as Tsar Boris III.
