  • POODLE, WITH BOW, ON TABLE
sixth-plate daguerreotype, modern seal, cased, 1850s

Condition

This daguerreotype is astonishing for the clarity of its rendering of a difficult subject. Looked at under magnification, this image shows a wealth of detail in the dog's face and in the texture of its fur. The plate is essentially in excellent condition. As visible in the catalogue illustration, there is some age-appropriate tarnishing around the circumference of the image, most notable on the left side. There are two clear accretions of indeterminate nature to the right of the poodle's hind leg – these are not obtrusive. The plate was re-sealed with white paper tape and backed with white paper in 1994. On this new backing appear the following notations in an unidentified hand in pencil: '—Daguerreotype 1/6th plate. '—Electroplated. '--Hallmark in top right corner ('40'). '--Rebound 12/94.' Remnants of an old, possibly original, seal are laid into the case. The case shows wear and its spine has been skillfully repaired with new leather.
