Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The figure was cast in parts; joints are visible throughout. There are holes and stable fissures to the surface due to casting flaws; some of which, including one to the back of the trampled figure on the base, have been patched. There is a possible restoration to left tip of the trident. The big toe of the proper left toe of the female figure is lost. The black marble base with white veins has a few minor chips and moisture stains to the surface.

Catalogue Note

The present bronze closely resembles a group representing Summer kept in St. Petersburg's Hermitage (inv. no. 915), however it exhibits slight variations and the figures hold different attributes. Bertos' intricate iconographical scheme is as interesting to behold as his complete mastery of the bronze. It is in these bronzes, with their elegant feather-light figures balanced in sweeping compositions, in which Bertos' art is epitomised.
