Description

  • Herman van Swanevelt
  • An Italianate wooded landscape with travellers on a path along the riverside
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

With Galleria Caretto, Turin (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The actual painting is less red, and more blue and green in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old slightly firm relining. The paint surface is a little abraded in some areas, mainly in the darker tones. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty varnish. Some scattered retouchings are visible to the naked eye, e.g. in the sky upper centre, in the donkey. Under UV light a horizontal repaired and retouched tear is revealed in the sky centre left, and furthermore, some additional scattered retouchings in the sky and trees in the left, and some strengthening of the figures. Offered in a decorative carved gilt wood frame, with a few losses.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr. Anne Charlotte Steland for endorsing the attribution to Swanevelt on the basis of photographs and for suggesting a date of execution in the second half of the 1640s, or even slightly later, whilst the artist was living in Paris.
