Description

  • Michiel van Musscher
  • A young girl with a blue an white satin dress, washing her feet in a pond, in a formal garden setting
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual paintings is brighter and shows more contrast than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an effective relining. The paint surface is secure, if a little abraded in the background, and is under a clear layer of varnish. No major damages are apparent. Some small scattered retouchings can be observed in the background. Under UV light the background looks more substantially restored, but, apart from two small spots in her face and right arm, the girl is very nicely preserved. Offered in a black ebonised wood frame in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the R.K.D., The Hague, for suggesting an attribution to Michiel van Musscher. This painting can be compared with a portrait of a family by Van Musscher, which was sold, New York, Christie's, 14 January 1993, lot 91. Both works reveal Van Musscher's typical way of painting broad, open faces with thick almond-shaped eyes.
