Estimate
6,000 - 9,000 EUR
bidding is closed

Description

  • Johann Friedrich August Tischbein
  • Portrait of Johann Melchior von Birckenstock (1738-1809), seated half-length, wearing a green jacket with a white chemise and a red coat
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Brentano - von Birckenstock (according to a label on the reverse);
Baron von Kühlmann-Stumm, Schloss Ramholz.

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a recent stable relining. The paint surface is well preserved, if a little thin in the green jacket lower centre, and is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Under UV light some small scattered retouchings can be made out in the background, in the hands, some larger ones in the coat, but only very minor ones in the forehead and chin, and the face in general is very nicely preserved. Offered in a plain wood frame with a gold fillet and decorative gold scroll leaf decorations in all corner, in fair condition. (MW)
