Description

  • Bartholomeus Engels
  • a landscape with a white horse and travellers, a river beyond, possibly Tobias and the Angel
  • signed lower right: Engels
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Dagnand-Launay Collection, 19th Century, (according to a label affixed to the reverse of the frame);
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 20April 1994, lot 117 (as ***Engels);
Anonymous sale, Drouot (Tajan), 12 June 1995, lot 25 (as Salomus Engels).

Condition

The actual painting is a lot brighter in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is sound and beveled on all sides. No damages are apparent. The paint surface is in fair condition, and is under a dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals a few tiny scattered retouchings, e.g. along the left edge, in the lower foreground, in the seated figures and a few tiny ones in the clouds. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame with a few paint losses. (MW)
