Description

  • Francesco da Ponte, called Francesco Bassano il Giovane the Younger
  • the lamentation over the dead christ
  • inscribed with an old inventory number lower left: 127
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint is a little abraded in some areas and is under a dirty varnish. Thorough inspection under UV light is impeded by the thick varnish although some scattered restorations and some minor retouchings do fluoresce. These restorations include two restored vertical tears of approximately 5 cm, one to the left of Christ's head and one to the centre above the candle and a further restored horizontal tear of approximately 6 cm in the upper left corner. Overall, the painting is in fair condition. Offered in a carved gilt wood cassetta frame in fairly good condition.

Catalogue Note

The composition is known in a number of versions and variants painted by Jacopo Bassano and his sons. The best known version is a painting today in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, which Arslan dates circa 1580-82 (see E. Arslan, I Bassano, vol. I, Milan 1960, p. 361).
