Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has been fairly recently restored. Some chips of gilding are missing around the top peak of the panel and there area few spots here and there that could be retouched, yet essentially the picture is almost ready to hang. One may assume that the outside frame and much of the decorative frame around the figure, has been repaired and re-gilded in the past, yet the gold directly around the figure and in the costume appears to be period. The figure itself, the face, hands and cassock, all seem to be in very healthy condition, although dirty yet not unattractively so. Cleaning and varnishing is not recommended, rather slightly retouching the aforementioned areas will suffice.
