Catalogue Note

Schubert's Variations Op.10 were published in 1822 with a dedication to Beethoven.  The autograph manuscript was dispersed and partly lost after an auction in Paris in 1935.  Other leaves now survive at the Sibley Library at Rochester NY, Paris and St Petersburg.

The present manuscript comprises the first and third leaves of Schubert's first composing draft (the second leaf is at Rochester, NY), bearing his title and signature, with the main Theme complete, and parts of five out of the eight variations, together with the composer's autograph title and signature. The fourth variation is also almost complete, lacking the first five bars.
