Condition

The movement is running, however we recommend service soon. The dial is nice and intact and in nice condition. The outside of the case is in nice condition. The charming inscription to the cuvette depicts two open hearts, one inscribed 'Twinnie' and the other, 'Twin', so that the full engraving reads 'Twinnie from Twin, July 4th, 1890.' The Patek Philippe box is also dated July 4th, 1890 on the exterior. The engraving to the interior of case has been partially rubbed out and possibly repaired, so the verse reading 'In Tempestate Securitas' is hard to read now.

Catalogue Note

The present example demonstrates Patek Philippe's tradition of referencing works of art, fables, or in this case, biblical stories, as a decorative element on their watches. The present example evokes both the legend of St. George slaying the dragon with his lance as well as the biblical story of Christ calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee. Both are common subjects in paintings and also often seen paired on either side of a coin or talisman. The detailed relief work in miniature on the present example is a testament to the artistic mastery of Patek Philippe's craftsmen, a tradition that continues today.
