Description

  • Francesco Guardi
  • View of the Piazza San Marco, Venice, Looking East
  • oil on canvas

Condition

Canvas is relined. Overall painting is in good condition. Paint is slightly pressed as a result of relining. U.V. light shows an old varnish, which appears to be slightly yellow to the naked eye. U.V. also shows some scattered retouches, at top of campanile most notably. Painting could benefit from a light cleaning to remove old varnish. Some slight rubbing probably from frame and around edges but nothing too disturbing. No visible over paint throughout composition. In a carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

This work is based on one of the most popular compositions by Francesco Guardi, which he produced in numerous variants. The Piazza San Marco is seen looking towards the Basilica and Campanile with the Procuratie Vecchie and Procuratie Nuove at left and right respectively.  There was a large demand for this type of Venetian view, which was enormously popular with the Grand Tourists of the late 18th century.
