Description

  • Nicolo Bambini
  • Flora and Zephyr
  • oval, oil on canvas

Provenance

Purchased by the father of the present owner before 1920;
Thence by descent in the family.

Condition

Canvas relined, and surface is slightly pressed in some areas (such as in the green drapery around Flora) as a result. That having been said, overall, the picture presents a strong image with nice retention of paint surface and impastos, particularly in the flowers, coloration and detail. There are some small areas of abrasion here and there, such as in the aforementioned green drapery in the extreme lower edge under Flora's foot. There are a few (very) small losses: one at right at the bottom of Flora's foot and another in the small yellow flower in Flora's headband. U.v. reveals retouches here and there in Flora's fleshtones (a few in her feet, legs, torso, breast, neck, and one above her eye). These vary in size, but are not disturbing. U.v. reveals additional retouches here and there in the background, especially at extreme lower edge. Other retouching is visible in aforementioned green drapery, most likely made to address these thinnesses. Picture is recommendable. In a carved blue-painted and gilt wood frame.
