  • The Betrayal of Christ
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Possibly Johan Pater and Antonietta Pater-Wtewael, Utrecht, to 1655;1
With Grete Ring, London.

Literature

A.W. Lowenthal, "Some Paintings by Peter Wtewael (1596-1660)," in Burlington Magazine, 116 (1974), p. 462, reproduced fig. 65;
A. W. Lowenthal, Joachim Wtewael and Dutch Mannerism, Doornspijk 1986, p. 180, cat. no. D-18.

Condition

Single panel is uncradled and slightly bowed, but appears stable. The panel is beveled on at least two sides. Strips of wood are adhered to the top, bottom, and right side, and it appears that another such strip was previously glued to the left side, but is no longer there. There are a few tiny wormholes visible on the verso of panel. There is some slight thinness in the background which is in part most likely due to the artist's thin application of paint, as well as to some slight abrasion. The painting is under a thick milky varnish which renders most retouches impossible to read under U.V. light. However, some minor retouches, mostly limited to the outline of the figure's costumes are visible. Overall, the picture presents a lovely image and may be hung as is. The painting is in a carved gilt wood and painted frame with minor abrasions to the gilding.
