Catalogue Note

Early in her career, not quite nineteen years old, Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquis of Lorne, Governor General of Canada, in 1883 chose one of her still lifes, Water Lilies for their collection.  Carlyle went on to become one of the prominent women artists in Canada during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  A retrospective of her work by Joan Murray was organized in 2004.
