Catalogue Note

Compositions by Jean-Paul Lemieux are instantly recognizable.  They are often challenging, intentionally awkward, and in this narrow, vertical landscape Le Patineur Solitaire, Lemieux demonstrates that he has mastered his craft.

Late works such as this are emotive and often regarded as meditations on solitude.  The figure here, however, evokes an independant spirit, totally serene within the landscape that reflects Lemieux's country and province, referenced by the settlement on the horizon.

Celebrated for his ability to convey mood and atmosphere through spare form, Lemieux has articulated a vision of Canada that is immediately recognized and absorbed by those who live there.
