Catalogue Note
Born in Valenciennes, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux began his studies under François Rude. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1844 and won the Prix de Rome in 1854.
Carpeaux designed this important relief for the facade of Charles Garnier's newly completed Opéra in 1865.
